Paper 3

This is an assemblage of more pages to create a background roughly double the size It comprises three elements, the Disneyland castle. The Micky Mouse/Thanos Combo, which I have reversed. I have also added a reversed Hollywood sign to replace the legs on the composite figure. Finally I have added Winnie The Pooh with the face of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Collectively these combine to suggest hypocrisy.

The pages are from a movie which the Western Critics liked but was changed to suit a Chinese audience. This is driven by money rather than the integrity of the character depicted. The Winnie the Poo figure was originally an internet meme, which the Chinese Government took down. Google also were put under pressure to take this down. The Castle shows the power of the franchise by being inverted and grasped between the fingers of the main character.

I like this work because of its overall composition, which is uncluttered. I am happy with the colours except for the bottom ‘Hollywood’ legs, which I think would work better in either black and yellow or blue and red. I am pleased with the visual effect of the background pages and their content.

Sketchbook experiment 1

I put the Winnie the Poo image above a stencil of the Hollywood sign which is reversed. This reverse image is meant to show behind the mask. I do not think the colours for the Hollywood sign work. It makes me think of Halloween and loses its connections.

The figure is more defined and effective. If I was to repeat, I would put them closer together.

Overall, I enjoy the speckled effect of the red paint. I can partially control this effect by how I use the can nozzles.

The Two Book Paper Experiments

The two samples show a smaller stencil. I was working on, these samples give me an idea of scale but the images look lonely on the pages. The colours fit the theme of the actual leader of the company (Lucas film). Both colour palettes fit the double standards but i wouldn't be using this stencil since its too small. However i would have done this differently could have enlarged it to an A3 stencil to better fit the taped book paper. Since it looked better than the one i ended up using and abstracting the looks.

Small pages first 3

The stencil is of the person in charge of the Star Wars company ‘Lucas Films’. She is wearing a T-Shirt worn in public saying the slogan ‘The Force is Female’. I have replaced her head with that of The Emperor from Star Wars. This mixes up two figures of authority. One fictional, one actual. I feel the depiction of female characters since she has been in charge has been denigrated. While the characters are now stronger, for me they lack humanity which is essential for the viewer to emotionally connect. This also applies to male characters but has not been done as much.

There has a massive shift in the nature of the films away from stories with more flaws and humanity and more vulnerability. This is a move to more ’family friendly’ depictions.

As images I think they are mixed. The maroon one is better than the white and green one as it has more graphic definition. I prefer the shadow effect on the yellow one. I have taken forward.

I have pushed the shadow effect by placing a darker tone down first. This throws the figure forward and shows an outer social persona over the real persona. Who could be seen as a sociopath.
